The team at German Automotive know that you can’t expect to work on Germany’s finest brands unless you are fully factory trained. We consider it crucial to continually complete brand specific training in order to properly maintain and repair vehicles across the Audi, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz range. That is why manager and part owner Ben Buckle has recently returned from specialised Audi, Volkswagen and Mercedes- Benz training in both the United States and Sydney. The two week course conducted in America has ensured that German Automotive technicians are up to date with all the latest vehicle technologies.

Tech Torgue: DSG Gearbox

A direct-shift gearbox, commonly abbreviated to DSG, is an electronically controlled dual-clutch multiple-shaft manual gearbox, in a transaxle design – without a conventional clutch pedal, and with full automatic, or semi-manual control. In simple terms, a DSG is two separate manual gearboxes (and clutches), contained within one housing, and working as one unit. The first actual dual-clutch transmissions were derived from Porsche inhouse development for 962 racing cars in the 1980s. It was designed by BorgWarner, and was initially licensed to the Volkswagen Group. By using two independent clutches, a DSG can achieve faster shift times and eliminates the torque converter of a conventional epicyclic automatic transmission.

Adam Hunter started working with German vehicles in 1996 after gaining an apprenticeship at the Geelong BMW dealership. He was awarded apprentice of the year in the final year of his apprenticeship before being promoted to workshop foreman. After a stint as service advisor Adam then expanded his European vehicle experience and headed to the UK to work as a technician. He returned to Geelong and started Hunter Cuthill with Gordon in 2005. He is now also part owner of German Automotive with partners Gordon & Ben Buckle and brings with him a wealth of German vehicle experience.

Wheel alignment is the precise measuring and positioning of the wheels on your vehicle to ensure it steers and tracks straight, resulting in the least amount of wear to your tyres. When set correctly it will significantly extend the life of your tyres,  improve handling, and improve fuel economy. Your vehicle would benefit from a wheel alignment if the steering wheel isn’t straight or your car pulls to either side or wanders on straight roads.  We recommend a wheel alignment every time you replace your tyres or at least once a year to ensure your vehicle’s safety and to minimise tyre wear.

Ben Buckle began his European vehicle career at the former luxury car dealer Peck & Stokes. Training on BMW, Ben became an award winning apprentice before broadening his knowledge at Geelong’s Volkswagen, Audi and Renault dealer.  Ben’s passion for his work, and in particular prestige European cars, is clearly apparent with the quality of his workmanship. In 2007 Ben joined Hunter Cuthill and is now joint owner and manager of the newly formed German Automotive.
